Be Your Own Life Coach - #9 Clarifying Your Goals





Welcome back and I hope that those of you who have followed this series of posts so far have made great strides towards setting and achieving goals and ambitions in your lives.


Others, who have just read individual posts, have, I hope, gleaned useful nuggets by way of suggestions, ideas, techniques and actions that either make life in general a smoother ride, or assist in particularly difficult situations.


In this post we’re going to go full circle to the first post and revise what our goals or ambitions are. We will look at an excellent way of refining these and setting them up as targets for us. In this way, we engage the most powerful parts of our minds to achieve them.


We often hear now about “Visualisation” and visualising an outcome. Successful sports people do this all the time in preparation for performing at their best. They spend a lot of time visualising their performance in great detail in their imagination. Then, after much mental rehearsal, the actual action of doing it is much more efficient.


So it is with all things. The more we mentally rehearse something the more likely we are to execute it successfully in reality. So let’s look at a proven technique for doing this effectively and easily.


It’s nice to have all sorts of different goals in different areas of our lives. What would be great is to be able to imagine what all of them together would mean to you. One of the best ways of doing this is to take some time out to create “Your Ideal Day”.


Use your imagination to do this and fill in as much detail as you can. Imagine it from the moment you wake up on the morning of Your Ideal Day to the time you fall asleep. How would it begin? Where would you be? What kind of environment would you be in? Where would you go? What would you do at each moment of that day? What people would be involved? What would you be doing with, or saying to, them? What would they be saying to you? How would you be dressed? What kinds of things would you be saying to yourself? What kind of expression would be on your face? How would your posture and general humour be? And how would it feel to be climbing into bed at the end of Your Ideal Day?


Remember: All the results, achievements, actions and realities that you experience in life start from creations in your mind… whether you are controlling those creative thoughts or not!


So start to take control. How can you achieve a dream if you don’t know what it is?! If you don’t make your own plan you will end up fitting into someone else’s.


Now, the first time you try this, you may find it hard work. It may take a few efforts before it becomes easier. But the truths behind it are undeniable and another truth is this, all success is based on consistent work. But it can be enjoyable. You have the choice of either designing your own life or suffering the regret that goes with “I should have….”


Imagine a precise vision of your desired life, focus on it every day. And the power of your mind will guide your thoughts and actions to produce your desired results.
